Sony has officially confirmed that physical PlayStation game discs are on their way out. Starting in January 2028, all new games released on PlayStation consoles will be sold digitally only, marking the end of an era for physical game collectors.
Will GTA 6 still release a physical copy this year, or will this be really the end for physical copies for this year and the next? Let’s find out!
Why Sony Is Moving Away From Physical Games
From a business perspective, the decision makes sense. Producing physical discs involves manufacturing, packaging, shipping, and retail distribution costs. Digital releases eliminate many of those expenses while giving publishers more control over pricing and distribution.

Sony has also been gradually moving toward a digital-first ecosystem for years. The release of the PS5 Digital Edition, the growth of digital, and subscription services have all pointed toward this eventual shift.
Still, just because the move was expected doesn’t mean everyone is happy about it.
What This Means for GTA 6
The good news for GTA fans is that GTA 6 won’t be affected by Sony’s decision to end physical game production in 2028. Since the game is set to release years before the cutoff date, players will still be able to purchase physical copies on PlayStation consoles.

However, Sony’s announcement highlights how quickly the gaming industry is moving toward an all-digital future. If Rockstar continues supporting GTA 6 for many years through updates and expansions, much of its long-term lifecycle could exist in a digital-first ecosystem.
What This Means for PlayStation’s Future
Sony’s decision may also offer a glimpse into what future PlayStation hardware could look like. While the company hasn’t announced any plans for its next-generation console, the move toward an entirely digital ecosystem suggests that physical media may play a much smaller role going forward.
Whether players embrace the change or not, one thing is clear: the gaming industry’s transition to digital is accelerating, and Sony has now made it official.
For many gamers who grew up buying PlayStation games on discs, January 2028 won’t just mark a business decision; it’ll mark the end of an era.
