You might think that GTA 6 will hold the record for the longest video game ever developed, given the game’s delay announcement yesterday.
Well, think again. According to Guinness World Records, the record is held by a game developed in 1997. Do you want to know more? Let’s dive in!
A Guinness World Record is an officially recognized achievement for being the best at a specific skill, activity, or possessing a unique characteristic.
Guinness World Record: Longest Game Ever Developed
Rockstar Games announced yesterday that GTA 6 will be delayed until November 2026. Fans are now split on the issue, with some saying “Ah yes, we told you it would be delayed again,” and others saying “I quit. “I’m tired of waiting.”

Now, you’d think that GTA 6 holds the record because it’s been in development for a long time, and Rockstar decided to push it back even further than the original official release date of May 26, 2026.
Well, apparently, Guinness World Records posted this one on X, taking a shot at Rockstar Games; the post states that Duke Nukem Forever held the title for 14 years and 43 days. It was developed beginning on April 28, 1997, and released on June 10, 2011. Crazy, isn’t it?
How Long Has GTA 6 Is In Development?
According to sources, Rockstar Games began preliminary work on GTA 6 in 2014, following the release of GTA 5. Early development began in 2018 after Red Dead Redemption 2. In 2020, principal production began under the codename “Project Americas.”

Therefore, if you count 2014 rather than 2018, which is the year that the game was in its early stages of development, then it is only 11 years.
Our Take
This is not a matter of who holds the current record; rather, it is a matter of informing GTA 6 fans that the delay in GTA 6 is not the end of the world.
In fact, as we stated above, Duke Nukem Forever holds the title, so we should be grateful that Rockstar Games did not pursue to break that title.
